What do other musicians who actually tried it say?

Wytze van der Meer, a professional bass player I know, has tested the PaddleBass for two weeks and was very excited about it.

He plays and owns professional instruments, a Lakland, a Fender Jazz V, a boutique bass from Heins and a double bass.

He states about the PaddleBass: A very nice bass, with a great neck. It cuts through the mix very well and you can get anything out of it using your fingers. It's very versatile. It's also great for slapping, it really comes alive, and its neck is even better than that of my other Luthier's bass. It has a sound of its own, the mids are very important in a bass and this one really fits in the mix!

Not needing a guitarstand is very practical. You just park it upright against your amp! It's also great to play in sitting position. The "thunderbirdridge" provides you with the freedom to put your right hand anywhere you like, allowing you to make your sound very easily.

On my request, Wytze recorded a song with the PaddleBass, I was astonished by his playing.

Hidde Roorda, bassplayer voor a.o. Nona and a pupil of Theo de Jong, wrote a review of the PaddleBass on basgitaarforum.nl, wich he translated for Talkbass.com: (click!) (incl. new soundsamples).

Earlier, I recorded some very short samples myself to capture the sound of the bass on it's own.

Neck pickup

Bridge pickup

In series

Two slapping samples, I did them myself and it's not my usual technique on bass, but for now it's all I have:

Slapping, parallel mode, both pickups and tone up.

Slapping, humbucking mode, volume and tone up.

Bonne van der Wal, bassist for (amongst other bands) Ska3:

My first impression without plugging in: Sustain! The sound and feel of lots of wood, while it's really a small body. The neck feels nice, a cross-over between a P and a J. Fretwork is perfect. The position of the pickups takes a moment to get used to, but is really nice.

Plugged in: Fat sound! Lots of sound-possibilities. Especially the single-coil/humbucker switch works verrry nice.
And with just the neck-pup on you can get a very thick P-like sound.

Summary: A very nice bass! Good sound-options (especially thanks to the series/parallel switch). In a little while Arnoud will make sure I can test it again, in a live-situation. I'm looking forward to it!!!

Update october 21, 2009: In november there will be more material from Bonne with Ska3! Meanwhile, check this youtube with him Paddling a little at my kitchen-table...
